You’ve probably been here before: you open a great trade, hold it overnight, and wake up the next morning to find a small deduction from your open account balance.

That small deduction is a swap fee (also known as an overnight financing fee or rollover fee).

Whether you trade forex pairs, metals, indices, or crypto CFDs, understanding swap fees helps you plan your trades, control your costs, and protect your profit targets. Here is a clear guide to what swap fees are, why they exist, and how they work across our FXIFY trading accounts.

Key Terms

TermDefinition
Swap FeeThe interest cost or payout for holding a trade past the daily market close.
Rollover TimeThe set daily cut-off time (5:00 PM EST) when overnight fees are applied.
Triple SwapA three-day swap fee charged on Wednesday evenings to cover weekend market closure.
Swap-Free AccountAn account option that removes standard interest-based overnight fees.

Why Do Swap Fees Exist?

A swap fee is the interest charged or paid for holding a trading position open overnight past the daily market close.

When you trade CFDs or forex on margin, you are effectively using leverage, which means borrowing capital to hold a larger market position. Because holding a trade overnight requires borrowed funds, an interest charge applies to keep that position open into the next trading day.

In forex trading, swap fees depend on the interest rate differential between two currencies:

  • Negative Swap (Fee): If you buy a currency with a lower interest rate against a currency with a higher interest rate, you pay an interest charge.
  • Positive Swap (Payout): If you buy a currency with a higher interest rate against a currency with a lower interest rate, you can earn a daily interest credit paid directly to your account.

When Are Swap Fees Charged?

Timing is everything when managing overnight costs. Here are the two key timing rules to keep in mind:

1. The 5:00 PM EST Rollover

Our daily market rollover takes place at 5:00 PM EST.

  • If you open and close a trade before 5:00 PM EST on the same day, you pay zero swap fees.
  • If your trade remains open at 5:00 PM EST for even one second, the system applies an overnight swap fee or credit to your account.

2. Triple Swap Wednesday

Global financial markets are closed on Saturday and Sunday, but banks still charge interest over the weekend.

To cover these two days, a triple swap fee (3 days of swaps) is charged on all forex and metals positions held open past 5:00 PM EST on Wednesday. If you hold swing trades through Wednesday evening, make sure to factor this three-day cost into your trade plan.

How Swap Fees Work Across FXIFY Accounts

At FXIFY, we keep our rules clear so you can choose the account style that fits your strategy best.

Evaluation Programs vs Instant Funding

  • Evaluation Programs (1-Phase, 2-Phase, 3-Phase, Lightning): Overnight and weekend holding are fully permitted. Standard swap fees apply whenever you hold positions past 5:00 PM EST.
  • Instant Funding: Weekday overnight holding is allowed (with standard swaps), but weekend holding is not permitted. All trades on Instant Funding accounts must be closed before the market closes on Friday.

RAW Feed vs All-In Feed

  • All-In Feed: Enjoy zero commissions on forex, metals, indices, and crypto. Standard swap fees apply to any trades held overnight.
  • RAW Feed: Get raw spreads with a flat $6 per lot commission. Standard swap fees still apply to overnight positions alongside the standard opening and closing commission.

The Swap-Free Option

If you follow Islamic financial principles (Sharia-compliant trading) or prefer long-term swing trading without ongoing interest fees, you can select our Swap-Free Add-On at checkout. With this option enabled, your overnight trades do not accrue standard interest-based swaps.

Simple Strategies to Manage Swap Fees

Managing overnight costs is a key part of professional trading:

  1. Close trades before 5:00 PM EST: If you are a day trader or scalper, close your open positions before 5:00 PM EST to avoid swap fees entirely.
  2. Factor swaps into your risk maths: When planning a multi-day swing trade, calculate the total expected swap cost alongside your stop-loss and take-profit targets.
  3. Use Swap-Free accounts for long holds: If your trading strategy involves holding trades for weeks or months, choose our Swap-Free Add-On at checkout to avoid accumulated overnight interest charges.

Master Your Overnight Trading Costs

Swap fees are a standard part of trading leveraged financial markets. By understanding when rollover occurs and choosing the right FXIFY feed and add-on for your style, you can manage your overnight costs with full confidence.

Take time to review your trade holding times, factor overnight fees into your position size math, and build your funded account with clarity and control.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Can a swap fee be positive?

Yes. If the interest rate of the currency you buy is higher than the interest rate of the currency you sell, you can earn a positive swap payout added to your account balance.

How can I avoid paying swap fees?

You can avoid swap fees by closing all your open trades before 5:00 PM EST each day, or by selecting our Swap-Free Add-On when starting your FXIFY account.

Why are swap fees charged on Wednesday for the weekend?

Because spot forex trades take two business days to settle, holding a trade past Wednesday 5:00 PM EST pushes settlement into Monday. The triple swap covers interest for Thursday, Saturday, and Sunday.

Where can I see current swap rates?

You can check real-time swap rates directly inside your FXIFY trading platform (MT4, MT5, or DXtrade) by right-clicking any instrument in the Market Watch window and selecting ‘Specification’.
