Best Time to Trade Forex for Funded Accounts

The forex market stays open twenty-four hours a day, five and a half days a week. I trade from South Africa, and session timing has only ever been half the story for me. Load shedding has cut my connection during my best trading window before, with no warning. From my experience, the best time to trade forex for funded accounts means picking a window and having a backup plan ready.

Key Terms to Know

TermWhat It Means
LiquidityHow easily you can buy or sell a pair without moving its price.
SpreadThe gap between the buy price and the sell price on a pair.
Session OverlapThe stretch of time when two trading sessions are open at once.
Daily Loss LimitA hard threshold that triggers a recalculation on your account. It does not cap the account or close it.
Trailing DrawdownA floor that tracks your highest closed balance, stated in full. The floor moves at server rollover time, not the moment a trade closes.
Load SheddingScheduled power cuts used in South Africa when demand is higher than supply.

Why Session Timing Matters for a Funded Account

It is easy to think more hours in the market means more chances to hit your target. In practice, the hours you choose affect your risk as much as your results.

Forex trading happens across overlapping sessions as financial centers around the world open and close. Each session brings a different level of liquidity and price movement.

High liquidity means tighter spreads and smoother order execution. Low liquidity means wider spreads and a higher chance of sudden, unpredictable price jumps. For a funded account, an unpredictable price jump is a real risk. A single sharp move during a thin market can use up a large part of your daily loss limit in seconds.

Every Forex Session Explained

Five sessions shape the trading day: Sydney, Tokyo, Frankfurt, London, and New York. Each one suits a different kind of trader and a different set of pairs. The times below are given in Eastern Time, since the United States, the United Kingdom, and Australia do not all start and end daylight saving on the same date, so the gap between them can shift by an hour for a short stretch each spring and autumn.

Sydney Session

Sydney opens at 4:00 PM EST, or 5:00 PM EDT, and runs until 12:00 AM EST, or 1:00 AM EDT. This is the first session of the trading day, opening as Australian markets come online. AUD crosses move the most here, since Australian data lands during this window. It suits traders working night shifts relative to their time zone, or those who focus on AUD pairs and prefer calmer, lower-volatility conditions.

Tokyo Session

Tokyo opens at 6:00 PM EST, or 7:00 PM EDT, and runs until 2:00 AM EST, or 3:00 AM EDT. This session follows Sydney, opening as broader Asian markets come online. It suits traders who want to catch the tail end of this session before London opens.

Frankfurt Session

Frankfurt opens at 2:00 AM EST, or 3:00 AM EDT, and runs until 10:00 AM EST, or 11:00 AM EDT. This session opens ahead of London, as European markets come online. It suits traders who want an early read on European direction before London adds more liquidity.

London Session

London opens at 3:00 AM EST, or 4:00 AM EDT, and runs until 11:00 AM EST, or 12:00 PM EDT. This session marks the start of the European trading day. It is one of the most liquid points of the trading day. It suits traders who want strong liquidity and are available during European business hours.

New York Session

New York opens at 8:00 AM EST, or 9:00 AM EDT, and runs until 4:00 PM EST, or 5:00 PM EDT. This session opens later in the day, as North American markets come online, and runs into the evening. It suits traders who prefer to trade later in the day, once London has been open for a while.

Best Time to Trade Forex: The London and New York Overlap

You do not need to track all five sessions. The overlap between the London and New York sessions sees the day’s highest trading volume. Two of the largest financial centers are active at the same time. Liquidity is at its highest, and spreads on major pairs are at their tightest.

This window falls at a different local time depending on where you trade, so check it against your time zone rather than assuming it means the middle of the night.

London and New York shift their clocks for daylight saving at different points in the year. Check your session times again each time they change, since the gap between your local time and these sessions can shift by an hour.

FXIFY Rules on Illiquid Hours and Economic Releases

Picking a good session is not only about finding opportunity. It is also about knowing which habits can put your funded account at risk so that you can trade with confidence instead of guesswork.

FXIFY does not ban trading during quiet hours or trading around economic releases. Two behavior patterns can trigger an account review instead.

The first is trading in low-liquidity hours to exploit thin markets. The second is placing trades continuously around scheduled economic releases. FXIFY treats both as signs of a prohibited strategy, not as strategies that are banned by name.

You do not need to avoid economic releases altogether. FXIFY permits high-leverage positions around them, within limits. You must manage risk properly when you take these positions.

Large leveraged positions taken without a clear plan can look like gambling behavior, and that can put your account at risk. Read the full guide on FXIFY’s Prohibited Strategies.

Protecting Your Account Through the Trading Day

Watching the clock can feel like one more thing to manage on top of your strategy. The mechanics are simple once you know them.

Your program’s daily loss limit is a hard threshold. It triggers a recalculation. It does not cap your account or close it.

If your program uses a trailing drawdown, the floor tracks your highest closed balance, stated in full. The floor moves at server rollover time, not the moment a trade closes.

Exact figures differ between FXIFY programs. Compare your program rules before you build your trading window routine.

Building a Simple Trading Window Routine

You do not need to trade every session to be a successful funded trader. Choosing two or three consistent windows can help you trade with more focus. The London open and the London-New York overlap are good starting points.

Fewer high-quality windows are easier to review and improve than trading around the clock. Track your results by session for a few weeks. Then keep the windows that fit your strategy and your account.

A stable connection matters as much as a stable strategy. A UPS or a mobile data backup can protect your open positions if your main connection fails during a trading window.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best time to trade forex for a funded account?

Does FXIFY allow trading during high-impact economic releases?

FXIFY permits high leverage positions around economic releases, within limits. You must show proper risk management when you use them. Trading continuously around releases without a clear plan can trigger an account review.

What if I lose power or internet during my trading window?

Losing power or internet does not change your account rules. A UPS or a mobile data backup can help protect open positions if your connection drops during a trading window.
