Floating P/L is the gain or loss on a trade that is still open. It changes every time the price moves, so it is not locked in. On an FXIFY account, floating P/L also counts toward some of your limits. This guide explains what it is, where to find it in MT5, and how FXIFY rules treat it.
Key Terms
| Term | What it means |
|---|---|
| Floating P/L | The gain or loss on a trade that is still open. It changes with every price move. |
| Realized P/L | The gain or loss on a trade you have closed. It is locked in. |
| Balance | The money in your account from closed trades only. |
| Equity | Your balance plus or minus your floating P/L. It shows what the account is worth right now. |
| Daily loss limit | A hard threshold that triggers a recalculation. It does not cap the account and does not close it. |
| Loss allowance | The amount you can lose before a loss limit is breached. |
| Breach level | The equity figure at which a loss limit is breached. |
What Is Floating P/L?
P/L stands for profit and loss. Floating P/L is the gain or loss on any trade you have not closed yet. Traders also call it open P/L or unrealized P/L.
The name comes from how it behaves. The number moves up and down with the price. A trade can show a $400 gain at noon and a $150 loss two hours later.
When you close the trade, the floating figure becomes realized P/L. Your platform then adds it to your balance.
Floating P/L vs Realized P/L
| Feature | Floating P/L | Realized P/L |
|---|---|---|
| When it changes | With every price move | Once, when you close the trade |
| Locked in? | No | Yes |
| Changes your balance? | No | Yes, when you close the trade |
| Changes your equity? | Yes, with every price move | No. It was already part of your equity before you closed |
Your balance moves only when you close a trade. Your equity moves all the time, because it includes every open trade.
The formula is short. Equity equals balance plus floating P/L. A floating loss is a negative number, so it lowers your equity. With no trades open, your balance and equity are the same.
Where to Find Floating P/L in MT5
MT5 is one of the trading platforms you can use at FXIFY. Open the Trade tab at the bottom of the MT5 screen. Every open position is listed there.
The Profit column shows the floating P/L for each position. The summary line shows your balance, equity and margin. For a full tour of that panel, see our guide on how to use MT5 for prop trading.
On an FXIFY account, watch your equity while trades are open. Your equity is the figure checked against the daily loss limit.
How Floating P/L Affects Your FXIFY Limits
Floating P/L affects two FXIFY limits in different ways.
Floating losses count toward the daily loss limit
The daily loss limit is set from your closing balance on the previous day, taken at 5 PM EST. FXIFY then checks this limit against your live equity. A floating loss counts toward the limit as soon as it appears.
This means an open trade can reach the breach level before you close it. The daily loss limit is a hard threshold. Reaching it triggers a recalculation. It does not cap the account, and it does not close it.
Our max daily loss guide shows the full calculation.
Floating gains do not move a trailing drawdown floor
Some FXIFY programs use trailing drawdown, such as One Phase. On these programs, the drawdown floor tracks the highest closed balance on the account. A floating gain is not closed, so it does not count.
The floor moves at server rollover time. It does not move the moment a trade closes. The trail distance in percent stays fixed. The trail distance in dollars grows as the account grows.
Say you are up $500 on an open trade, and then the price turns. The $500 can disappear, and the floor stays where it was. Our maximum loss limit guide shows how the floor works on each program.
A worked example
A trader has a $100,000 One Phase account. The daily loss limit on this program is 3%. Her closing balance at 5 PM EST yesterday was $100,000.
So her loss allowance for today is $3,000. Her breach level is $97,000. Later in the day, her GBPUSD trade moves against her.
| Measure | Amount |
|---|---|
| Balance | $100,000 |
| Floating P/L | Minus $2,500 |
| Equity | $97,500 |
| Breach level | $97,000 |
| Room left | $500 |
Her balance still shows $100,000, so nothing looks wrong at first. Her equity shows a different picture. She is $500 from the breach level, and the trade is still open.
Four Floating P/L Mistakes to Avoid
These four mistakes start from one idea. The idea is that an open number does not count yet.
Treating a floating gain as money made. The gain is not locked in. The price can take it back before you close the trade.
Keeping a losing trade open because the loss does not feel final. Your equity includes that loss right now. That loss also counts toward the daily loss limit.
Adding size because a trade is in profit. A floating gain does not move a trailing floor. The extra size adds risk, but it gives you no extra room.
Forgetting about price gaps. Prices can gap when the market opens after a weekend. Your floating P/L can then jump in one move. A stop loss does not guarantee your exit price in a gap.
FAQs
Does a floating gain move a trailing drawdown floor?
No. The floor tracks the highest closed balance, and it moves at server rollover time. Gains on open trades do not move it.
Does a floating loss count toward the daily loss limit at FXIFY?
Yes. FXIFY checks the daily loss limit against your live equity. Your equity includes your floating P/L.
What happens when equity reaches the daily loss limit?
The daily loss limit is a hard threshold. Reaching it triggers a recalculation. It does not cap the account, and it does not close it.
What is the difference between balance and equity?
Balance counts closed trades only. Equity adds or subtracts your floating P/L. This is why equity shows what the account is worth right now.
When does floating P/L become realized?
It becomes realized when you close the trade. Your platform then locks in the gain or loss and adds it to your balance.
Can floating P/L turn from a gain into a loss?
Yes. This can happen at any time while the trade is open. A trade can show a $300 gain in the morning and a loss by the evening.
Summary
Floating P/L shows what an open trade is worth right now. It does not show what you have made. On an FXIFY account, your equity is the figure checked against the daily loss limit.
Watch your equity while trades are open. Size each trade so that a normal move against you stays well above your breach level. You can compare the FXIFY programs to see how each one sets its limits.
