Swing trading can be profitable. Whether it works for you depends on numbers you can measure: your edge, your holding costs and your exposure to price gaps.

So, is swing trading profitable for you? This article looks at four points. The first is the math of a swing trade. Then come the cost of holding overnight and the risk of price gaps. The last is how open trades sit against the limits of an FXIFY funded account.

What Is Swing Trading?

Swing trading means you hold a trade for more than one trading day. A swing trade can stay open for two days or for two weeks. You aim to catch a larger price move than a day trader would.

Because your trades stay open, they pass through the daily rollover. Some also stay open over the weekend. You also place fewer trades than a day trader. Each of these facts changes the math, and I cover them one by one.

What Makes Swing Trading Profitable

The core test is expectancy. Expectancy is the average amount you make or lose on each trade, after wins and losses. I explain the full method in [INTERNAL LINK: Is Day Trading Profitable?]. Here I apply it to a swing trader.

Expectancy = (win rate × average win) − (loss rate × average loss)

The numbers below are an example I made up. No FXIFY account produced them.

Say you take 30 swing trades in a year. You win 12 of them, which is 40%. Your average win is $600. You lose 18 trades. Your average loss is $250.

  • Win side: 0.40 × $600 = $240
  • Loss side: 0.60 × $250 = $150
  • Expectancy: $240 − $150 = $90 per trade

Over 30 trades, that is $2,700 before costs. You lost six in ten trades and still came out ahead. Your wins were 2.4 times the size of your losses.

That 2.4 to 1 ratio sets your break-even win rate. The formula is 1 ÷ (1 + 2.4), which gives 29.4%. Below that win rate, this trader loses money before costs. Swing trading often runs on this shape: fewer wins, but larger ones.

The Cost of Holding Overnight

Day traders close their trades before the daily rollover. A swing trader does not. On CFD accounts, a swap is a fee or credit applied to a position held past the daily rollover. The longer you hold, the more swap days you add.

Let me add costs to the example above. These are made-up costs, not FXIFY rates.

  • Spread and commission: $10 per trade
  • Swap: $8 per night held

If you hold each trade for 5 nights, swap adds $40. Your total cost is $50 per trade. Your expectancy drops from $90 to $40. Over 30 trades, that is $1,200.

Now hold each trade for 10 nights. Swap adds $80, so your cost is $90 per trade. Your expectancy drops to $0. The entries and exits stayed the same. Only the holding time changed.

A swap can also be a credit, depending on the market and the direction of your trade. Check the swap for each market on your platform before you trade. Then record it for every trade you hold.

Price Gaps and Weekend Risk

A price gap happens when a market opens at a different price from where it closed. Gaps can happen overnight. They can be larger over the weekend, because the market is closed while events still happen.

A stop loss does not promise your exit price in a gap. If price opens past your stop, the order fills at the next price available. So a planned loss of $250 can turn into a larger one.

Weekend rules on FXIFY depend on the account:

  • One Phase, Two Phase (Standard, Classic and Pro) and Three Phase accounts allow you to hold trades over the weekend.
  • On Instant Funding accounts, all positions must be closed before 3:45 PM EST on Friday. Any position still open at that time is closed at the current market rate.

The market reopens on Sunday at 5:00 PM EST. If you hold over the weekend, plan your position size for a possible gap at that open.

Fewer Trades Means Slower Proof

A day trader who places 5 trades a day reaches 100 trades in about 20 trading days. A swing trader who places 30 trades a year needs more than three years to reach 100.

This matters because a small set of trades is easy for luck to move. Take the example above. You won 12 of 30 trades, and your expectancy was $90.

  • With 2 more wins (14 of 30), your expectancy becomes $146.67.
  • With 2 fewer wins (10 of 30), your expectancy becomes $33.33.

Two trades moved the result by more than $100 per trade. So I would not judge a swing strategy on one or two months of results. Keep logging until your set of trades is large enough that a few results cannot move the average this much.

Swing Trading Inside an FXIFY Funded Account

Every FXIFY funded account has two risk limits: a daily loss limit and a maximum drawdown. The figures change from program to program. You can see them on the FXIFY programs page.

These limits matter more for swing traders, because your trades stay open across days. For help choosing an account type, see our guide to FXIFY programs for swing traders.

Open Trades and the Daily Loss Limit

The daily loss limit is set from your balance at the end of the previous day, recorded at 5 PM EST. Balance does not include open trades. Your equity, which does include open trades, is checked against the limit at all times.

This creates a case that day traders do not face. Take this example with made-up numbers. It is not an FXIFY program.

  • Your balance at 5 PM EST is $10,000.
  • Your daily loss allowance is $400.
  • Your breach level for the new day is $9,600.
  • You hold a swing trade that is $300 down at 5 PM EST.

Your equity starts the new day at $9,700. That is only $100 above the breach level. The $300 floating loss from yesterday already uses most of today’s allowance.

The opposite case also applies. Say the same trade is $500 up at 5 PM EST. Your breach level is still $9,600, because it comes from the balance. Your equity starts the day at $10,500. The trade can give back its open profit before it touches the daily allowance.

Check your open trades at 5 PM EST each day. Then work out how much room you have for the next day.

Maximum Drawdown

Maximum drawdown sets the lowest level your account can reach. Each program uses either static or trailing drawdown, and the figure depends on the program. Before you hold trades for several days, read the drawdown rules for your account in the FXIFY FAQs.

How to Check If Your Swing Trading Is Profitable

Your own trade log can answer this question. Here are the steps I would take with it:

  1. Keep a trade log. Record the market, entry date, exit date, size, result, spread, commission and swap.
  2. Count the nights each trade was held. This shows how holding time affects your costs.
  3. Calculate your win rate, your average win and your average loss.
  4. Subtract your average total cost per trade, swap included.
  5. Run all of these numbers through the expectancy formula.

If your expectancy is below zero, look at swap first. A shorter holding time can change the result more than a new entry rule.

Past results do not promise future results. Markets change, and a swing edge can shrink or stop working.

So, Is Swing Trading Profitable?

My answer is this. Swing trading can be profitable when your expectancy stays above zero after spread, commission and swap. That result needs to hold over a large set of trades, which takes time at a swing trader’s pace. Your trades also need to stay inside your account limits for as long as they are open.

Regulator data from ESMA shows that a large share of retail CFD accounts lose money. Treat profit as a result you check, not one you count on. Only trade with money you can afford to lose.

The risk limits for each account are listed on the FXIFY programs page.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I hold swing trades over the weekend on FXIFY?

Yes, on One Phase, Two Phase (Standard, Classic and Pro) and Three Phase accounts. On Instant Funding accounts, all positions must be closed before 3:45 PM EST on Friday.

Do swaps make swing trading unprofitable?

Not always. A swap can be a fee or a credit. But swap fees grow with every night you hold, so they can remove a small edge. Track swap for every trade in your log.

How many swing trades do I need to judge my results?

There is no fixed number. More trades give you an average you can rely on. With a small set, two or three trades can change the result a lot.
