Wyckoff accumulation is a range that forms at the bottom of a downtrend before price turns up. The Wyckoff accumulation schematic maps that range as a series of events in a set order. In the first version of the schematic, the key event is the spring. The trade setups come late in the range.

What Is Wyckoff Accumulation?

Richard Wyckoff studied how supply and demand move prices. Later Wyckoff teachers built his ideas into the schematics and event names used today.

The model splits the market cycle into four parts: accumulation, markup, distribution and markdown. Accumulation is the first part. In the model, it is where large buyers build positions while price moves sideways after a downtrend.

Treat this as a model, not a fact about any trader. A retail chart shows price and volume, not who is buying.

On forex and CFD charts, volume is tick volume. It counts price changes, not traded amounts. Use it as a clue and put more weight on price structure. How to Use the Volume Indicator explains how to read it.

Wyckoff Accumulation Events in Plain Words

EventFull nameWhat it means
PSPreliminary supportThe first stall in the downtrend, with a rise in volume.
SCSelling climaxA sharp drop to a new low, then a turn up.
ARAutomatic rallyThe fast rise after the SC. Its high sets the top of the range.
STSecondary testA drop back toward the SC low that holds.
SpringSpringA move below the bottom of the range that comes back inside.
TestTest of the springA later drop toward the spring low that holds higher.
SOSSign of strengthA strong rise to or above the top of the range.
LPSLast point of supportA pullback that holds above the last low. It shows up late in the range.
BUBack-upA pullback after the SOS to the old top of the range. It is one kind of LPS.

The bottom of the range is set by the SC low. The top of the range is called the creek. It is the resistance line set by the AR high. When the SOS breaks above it, this is called a jump across the creek (JAC).

The Five Phases of the Wyckoff Accumulation Schematic

Phase A: The Downtrend Stops

PS shows the first stall in the fall. The SC drops to a new low and turns up. The AR rises fast and sets the creek. The ST drops back toward the SC low and holds. The range now has a top and a bottom.

Phase B: The Range Builds

Price moves up and down inside the range. This phase can last longer than the others. In the model, large buyers build most of their position here.

Phase C: The Spring or Test

In Schematic 1, price drops below the bottom of the range, then comes back inside. This is the spring. A test can follow, where price drops again but holds above the spring low. In Schematic 2, there is no spring, and a higher low inside the range acts as the test.

Phase D: Strength Shows

Price rises to or above the creek with a SOS. Pullbacks after that hold higher. Each one is an LPS. A pullback to the old creek after the JAC is the BU.

Phase E: The Markup Begins

Price leaves the range and the uptrend starts. Pullbacks are small and hold above the old creek.

The Wyckoff Spring: A Closer Look

Spring vs a Breakdown That Keeps Going

Both start the same way: price drops below the bottom of the range. The difference is what happens next.

  • Spring: Price closes back inside the range. The drop below support does not hold.
  • Breakdown: Price stays below the range and keeps falling. The range was not accumulation.

You only know it was a spring once price is back inside the range. A spring is a false breakdown, so it works like the false breakouts in What If the Charts Are Lying? A Guide to False Breakouts.

The spring candle can look like a hammer, with a long lower wick. The Hammer Candlestick Pattern Cheatsheet shows how to read it.

Why the Test After the Spring Matters

In the model, the test shows whether selling has dried up. Price drops back toward the spring low but holds above it. In the model, the test comes with less activity than the spring.

A test that breaks below the spring low is a warning. The spring may have failed.

Schematic 1 vs Schematic 2

  • Schematic 1: Phase C has a spring below the range, then a test.
  • Schematic 2: There is no spring. Price makes a higher low inside the range instead, and that low acts as the test.

If you wait for a spring that never comes, you can miss a Schematic 2 setup.

How to Trade Wyckoff Accumulation

Entry After the Spring Test

Wait for the test to hold above the spring low. In Schematic 2, use the higher low as the test. Then look for a candle that closes back up, and buy at the open of the next candle.

This is the earliest entry and carries the most risk. Phase D has not yet shown strength, and the range can still break down

Entry on the Back-Up

Wait for the SOS to close above the creek. Then wait for price to pull back to the old creek. If that level holds and a candle closes back up, buy at the open of the next candle.

This entry comes later, after the chart has shown strength. It can also allow a closer stop than the spring entry.

Entry on an LPS

Some ranges do not pull back to the creek. Other LPS pullbacks can still form in Phase D. When one holds above the last low, buy after a candle closes back up.

Where to Put the Stop Loss

Use the stop that matches your entry:

  • Spring test entry: below the spring low, or below the test low in Schematic 2.
  • Back-up entry: below the old creek, with a small gap.
  • LPS entry: below the LPS low.

The accumulation idea as a whole fails if price closes below the spring low. If there was no spring, use the SC low.

Work out your trade size from the stop distance. How to Calculate Position Size on a Funded Account shows how. A stop can fill at a worse price than planned when price gaps or moves fast.

Setting a Target

Measure the height of the range, from the SC low to the creek. Add that height to the creek. This gives a measured target above the range.

Worked Example

The prices below are for teaching only. They are not a forecast.

NZD/USD falls on the 4-hour chart. The SC reaches 0.5800. The AR rises to 0.5920, which sets the creek. The range is 120 pips tall.

Later, price springs to 0.5780 and closes back inside at 0.5815. The test holds at 0.5795. Then a SOS closes above the creek at 0.5945.

Price pulls back to the old creek. The back-up reaches 0.5925, and a candle closes back up at 0.5935. The next candle opens at 0.5936, and you buy there.

The stop goes at 0.5905, below the creek. For the target, add 120 pips to the creek at 0.5920. That gives 0.6040. You risk 31 pips to aim for 104 pips.

Accumulation vs Redistribution: When the Range Breaks Down

A range inside a downtrend can also be redistribution. In the model, this is a pause where sellers add to their positions before the downtrend carries on.

The two look alike until late in the range:

  • Accumulation: Any drop below the range comes back inside, and price rises to the creek.
  • Redistribution: A drop below the range holds, and rallies fail below the creek.

If price closes below the failure level from the stop section and stays there, stop reading the range as accumulation. For trading inside the range before it breaks, see the Range Trading Guide for Funded Traders.

Common Wyckoff Accumulation Mistakes

  • Moving the stop after the spring fails. If price closes below the spring low, the setup has failed. Moving the stop lower to a new low turns one loss into a bigger one.
  • Measuring the target from the spring low. The spring sits below the range. Measuring from there makes the range look taller and the target too far. Measure from the SC low to the creek.
  • Buying before the SOS candle closes. Price can push above the creek and then close back below it. That is a failed break, not a SOS. Wait for the close.

Wyckoff Accumulation FAQ

Is a spring the same as a stop hunt?

They describe the same price move: a quick drop below support that comes back. “Stop hunt” suggests someone set out to trigger stop orders. A chart cannot show that. “Spring” only describes what price did, so this guide uses it.

How long does a Wyckoff accumulation range last?

There is no fixed length. A range on a daily chart can last weeks or months. A range on a 15-minute chart can form in a day. Phase B is the part that varies most.

Can you trade Wyckoff accumulation on a funded account?

The method is chart analysis, so you read the chart the same way on any account. Before you trade it, check the trading rules for your program on the FXIFY programs page. Accumulation ranges can be wide, so size each trade from its stop. Test the method on past charts first with How to Backtest a Trading Strategy.
